Further Education Students Encouraged to Apply for US Scholarship Programme

Further education students in Northern Ireland are being encouraged to apply for the Study USA programme, an international study opportunity that allows participants to spend a full academic year studying in the United States.

Delivered by the British Council on behalf of the Department for the Economy, Study USA places students at more than 140 universities and colleges across over 20 US states. The programme is open to students in the first year of a Higher National Diploma (HND) or foundation degree, as well as those in the second year of an undergraduate course.

Participants can select courses that align with their home studies while also exploring additional subjects such as entrepreneurship, leadership, marketing, communications, and modern languages, offering both academic flexibility and personal development.

Ballymena Student Recognised for Leadership in the US

One of last year’s participants, Luke Kirkwood from Ballymena, was honoured with the Study USA Spirit Award at the programme’s recent graduation ceremony. The award recognises exceptional commitment, leadership, and positive engagement during the study year in America.

Kirkwood, who studies Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Northern Regional College, completed his placement at Shenandoah University in Virginia. During his time there, he made a strong contribution to campus life by supporting fellow international students, joining student organisations, and engaging actively in cultural activities.

Reflecting on his experience, Kirkwood described the year as transformative.

“Arriving in the US was daunting at first, but embracing new experiences helped me find my place,” he said. “Study USA pushed me out of my comfort zone and gave me confidence, resilience, and friendships that will stay with me for life. Receiving the Spirit Award was an incredible honour, and I would encourage other FE students to apply — it really can shape your future.”

Fully Funded Opportunity with Extensive Support

The programme benefits from strong partnerships with American institutions, supported by more than €2.3 million in funding each year. Successful applicants receive a comprehensive scholarship package covering tuition, on-campus housing, a full meal plan, books, flights, and a £1,000 bursary.

Study USA aims to expand students’ global perspectives while strengthening skills that improve employability upon their return to Northern Ireland.

Building Skills for the Future

Mary Mallon, Head of Education at British Council Northern Ireland, highlighted the long-term impact of the initiative.

“Study USA consistently delivers life-changing outcomes for participants,” she said. “Students return with greater confidence, a wider worldview, and valuable professional networks. Experiences like Luke’s demonstrate the powerful role international study can play, particularly for further education students.”

She added that employers increasingly value the global awareness and adaptability gained through such programmes, encouraging eligible students to consider applying.

Funded by the Department for the Economy and supported by the Skills Fund as part of the Minister’s Economic Vision, Study USA is now accepting applications. Further education students have until Sunday, 4 January 2026 to apply.
